What is the largest sapphire, September's birthstone, in the world?

"The Star of Adam" is an oval-shaped blue star sapphire, currently the largest star sapphire in the world. Star sapphires get their name from the six-pointed star-shaped reflection that appears on their surface once they are polished. It weighs 1,404.49 carats, and its estimated value is at least US$100 million #starsapphire

"The circle symbolizes eternity, with no beginning or end. What most people don't know is that the hole in the center of the ring also has significance—it's not just space, but rather a gateway or door. When you give a woman a ring, it signifies immortal love."

One of the world's most famous sapphires, the birthstone of September, has been worn by not one, but two royal princesses!

Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales, became engaged in February 1981. Her engagement ring consists of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a stunning 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire set in 18-karat white gold.

After Princess Diana's tragic death, the ring was passed down to her son William, who would give it to his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton, in the fall of 2010.

It is often said that every piece of jewelry tells a story; the white pearls decorating Arleen Meyer's neck in the photo below were a wedding gift from her husband, Forrest, 75 years ago. Imagine the story they tell!

Arleen, 95, and Forrest, 97, were married in 1943 after a year of courtship. Forrest shares a fun anecdote about his proposal to Arleen; He bought a ring for $50 and showed his mother who told him to take it back as it was not good enough! She gave him $50 and sent him back to buy a better ring.

Arleen was a school-teacher and Forrest retired after 35 years General Electric. They have three daughters, and are blessed with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Despite being in their 90s, the couple is still cognitively intact.

What are the keys to a long marriage? It's simple.

"We don't argue; she is always right," Forrest said.

September's birthstone is the beautiful sapphire. In lore, sapphire symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Ancient Greek and Roman kings and queens were convinced that blue sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm.

Traditionally, people have prized these gems for their celestial blues and violets. Its extraordinary color is the standard against which other blue gems—from topaz to tanzanite—are measured. Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or violet-ish blue, as well as various shades of pure blue. The most prized are a medium to medium dark blue or slightly violet-ish blue.

#jewelryfacts Where did birthstones first originate from?

Scholars trace back the idea of a gemstone assigned to each month of the year to the Breastplate of Aaron described in the book of Exodus in the Bible. The Breastplate was set with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The gems were set in four rows of three: Sardius, topaz and carbuncle; emerald, sapphire and diamond; ligure, agate and amethyst; andberyl, onyx and jasper. The connection was made between the 12 stones in the Breastplate and the 12 signs of the zodiac.

However, it wasn't until much more recently, in 1912, that the modern list of birthstones was defined. The list remains to this day, with a few additions.

Historical jewelry #TBT 💎 August's newest birthstone, Spinel, has a long history of being misidentified for a ruby. In fact, many famous rubies are spinel!

The Timur Ruby of the British Crown Jewels, the center uncut 352.5 carat stone in this necklace, is actually a red spinel. It is inscribed with the names/dates of it's 6 previous owners from about 1300's-1754. The British took the Timur in 1849 as part of an Indian collection and turned it into a necklace in 1853, as part of the British Crown Jewels. It was believed to be a ruby all the way up until 1851.
